GLOBAL ACTIVITIES

Our long-term partners: Austrian Red Cross works in Eastern Africa (Ethiopia, Rwanda, Uganda), in South-Eastern and Eastern Europe (Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Ukraine), in Southern Caucasus (Armenia, Georgia) and in the Middle East (Lebanon, Syria).

UKRAINE

Armed conflict since 2014 with escalation in February 2022. According to the UN there are 5.3 million internally displaced persons. 17.6 million people need humanitarian aid. The Austrian Red Cross has supported 844,000 persons with relief items, shelter, health services, cash and vouchers since February 2022. The whole Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement reached 12.6 million people.

NAGORNO-KARABAKH, ARMENIA

Conflict since 2020 – according to Amnesty International 130.000 persons in Nagorno-Karabakh depend on outside relief supplies and medical care. The ICRC supports with food items, hygiene parcels, medicines, and medical evacuations. In Armenia, those who fled receive rent subsidies, psychological care, and support through training programmes and job market integration from the Red Cross.

AFGHANISTAN

Armed conflict 2001-2021, continuing violence and fighting, prolonged drought since 2020 and economic collapse in 2021. According to the World Food Programme (WFP), 28.5 million people depend on humanitarian aid, and half of the population suffers from hunger. The Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement reached over 5.1 million people with food, water supply, medical services and psycho-social support in 2022.

YEMEN

Ongoing conflict since 2015 with a ceasefire since April 2022. Around 540,000 children under five are malnourished. Overall, 17 million people are malnourished. With support from Austrian Red Cross, the ICRC supplied 130,000 persons with food and 670,000 persons with potable water in 2022.

TIGRAY, ETHIOPIA

Armed conflict that spilled over to two neighbouring regions from November 2020 to November 2022. There are 1.8 million internally displaced persons. In total, 12.2 million people in the areas affected need humanitarian aid. The Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement has supported more than 17 million persons with food, relief items, emergency shelter, cash, water, hygiene and emergency medical services in the whole country.

BURKINA FASO

Armed conflict since 2016 that escalated in 2021, additionally violence between different ethnicities. According to the UN, 4.7 million people need humanitarian aid, of which 1.9 million are internally displaced. Austrian Red Cross supports around 70,000 persons through improvement of health services and water supply as well as offering services in 16 health centres.

SYRIA

Armed conflict since 2011 – 14 million displaced persons according to the UN, of which 6.8 million within Syria. 90 % of the population live below the poverty line, and only half of the water and health infrastructure in the country are still functional. Austrian Red Cross supported around 50,000 inhabitants of Deir Ezzor with water supply in 2022. The Syrian Arab Red Crescent reaches over 5 million people with humanitarian aid each year.
